Celebrating 39 Years of Empowering Girls Through Sports in the U.S.

Celebrating National Girls & Women in Sports Day

The Women’s Sports Foundation (WSF) is set to commemorate its 39th National Girls & Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) this week in Washington, D.C. The event brings together trailblazing athletes, advocates, and leaders to celebrate how sports can fuel women's leadership, making a positive impact on our society. This year’s theme underscores the importance of equal access to sports, encapsulated in the slogan, "When girls play, they lead, and we all win!"

The Importance of Women in Sports

Originating from a rich history established in 1987, NGWSD aims to inspire girls to overcome barriers and pursue their dreams in sports. This year also marks an important milestone as WSF continues its 50-year legacy of advocating for girls and women's rights in athletics. The day not only reflects on the progress made since the organization's founding by sports icon Billie Jean King, but also spotlights the continued need for equity in sports participation.

In light of its anniversary celebrations in 2024, WSF released two critical research reports just prior to NGWSD. The findings from "Play to Lead: The Generational Impact of Sport on Women's Leadership" showcase how sports participation teaches girls essential leadership skills such as teamwork and resilience. Additionally, the report titled "Thriving Through Sport: The Transformative Impact on Girls' Mental Health" reveals the crucial role sports play in fostering mental well-being, helping to reduce anxiety and depression among girls.

Events Highlighting Leadership and Inclusion

The central events of NGWSD will take place from February 4-5, focusing on creating more opportunities for girls in sports. An Athlete Ambassador Program will occur on the eve of NGWSD at American University, featuring a sports clinic led by the Washington Mystics and student-athletes. This program aims to cultivate skills in basketball and soccer among girls aged 8-14.

WSF's initiatives also include a panel discussion highlighting the importance of NGWSD, inviting renowned athletes and leaders to share their experiences and insights. Importantly, workshops for parents will utilize WSF’s research to illustrate their crucial role in encouraging their daughters' involvement in sports. These events serve to empower parents with knowledge and strategies to support their children effectively.

Advocating for Policy and Inclusion

On the national day itself, members of WSF, including prominent athletes and coaches, will converge on Capitol Hill to engage with lawmakers. They will discuss pressing advocacy issues affecting girls and women in sports, with a focus on policies that aim to eliminate barriers and promote inclusion, especially for women with disabilities. WSF President Scout Bassett, who herself is a Paralympian, emphasizes the importance of advocacy for comprehensive change that allows all girls to participate, compete, and lead.

The Legacy Continues

For decades, WSF's work has proven that investing in women’s sports is vital to shaping a better future for society. CEO Danette Leighton remarks on the progress achieved through dedicated research and advocacy efforts, asserting that when girls are given the tools to thrive in sports, they also thrive in life.

The week will culminate in a reception, bringing together advocates, athletes, policy-makers, and business leaders to discuss the ongoing work and impact of WSF. Participants will have the opportunity to learn more about how they can contribute to leveling the playing field for girls and women in sports.

NGWSD isn’t merely a moment; it’s a movement towards creating equitable opportunities for women in athletics. As we look forward to this year’s celebrations, the Women's Sports Foundation remains steadfast in its mission to ensure that all girls have the chance to play, compete, and lead, solidifying the adage that when girls play, we all win!
