WeRide Initiates Fully Autonomous Robotaxi Trials in Abu Dhabi, Expanding Service Coverage

In a landmark announcement, WeRide, a global leader in autonomous driving technology, has commenced trial operations of its fully driverless robotaxi service in Abu Dhabi. This initiative, which is the first of its kind in the Middle East, sets a new precedent for smart mobility in the region. Starting this quarter, WeRide's fleet of robotaxis will operate on public roads without any safety driver, signifying a monumental leap for autonomous transportation in Abu Dhabi.

As part of this new phase, WeRide is also broadening its service coverage to include the prominent Al Maryah Island, which serves as the city’s financial center and is home to the Abu Dhabi Global Market, as well as the bustling Al Reem Island, known for its vibrant residential areas. These additions will enhance the existing network of WeRide's robotaxis, which has been safely serving areas such as Yas Island, Saadiyat Island, and routes connecting to Zayed International Airport since 2021.

Jennifer Li, the Chief Financial Officer and International Head of WeRide, remarked, “WeRide is making history by being the first company to implement a fully autonomous robotaxi pilot program in the Middle East, demonstrating our leadership in one of the world’s most dynamic urban environments. Simultaneously, we are expanding our commercial service to high-demand areas like Al Maryah and Al Reem, bringing intelligent mobility solutions to more users in the region. Together, this showcases our technological maturity and brings us closer to the mass commercialization of robotaxis.”

WeRide is accelerating its global expansion, with the United Arab Emirates being a key market. In July 2023, the company received the first and only national license for autonomous vehicles in the UAE, granting them permission to test and operate autonomous vehicles on public roads nationwide. In a significant partnership, WeRide and Uber launched their transportation alliance in Abu Dhabi in December 2024, marking the largest commercial robotaxi service outside of the United States and China.

By the summer of 2025, additional driverless rides and service areas are expected to be introduced, pending regulatory approval. This move underscores WeRide’s commitment to advancing autonomous vehicle technology and making it accessible to the public.
