Teamsters at Brookfield Zoo Begin ULP Strike Demanding Fair Contracts

Strike at Brookfield Zoo

On May 4, 2026, over 100 members of Teamsters Local 727, associated with the Chicago Zoological Society, took a stand and launched an unfair labor practice (ULP) strike at Brookfield Zoo in Chicago. This move represents a significant action as workers, with the exception of the animal care specialists, downed tools at 5 a.m. this morning. The animal care specialists are set to join them on the picket line once a plan for the animals' essential care during the strike has been finalized.

This strike comes shortly after zoo management confirmed that their previous claims regarding an alternative health care plan for employees were inaccurate. It was made clear that there would be no substitute for the current union health care under the stale contract negotiations, which were abruptly ended by management, leaving the union’s offer unanswered.

John Coli, Jr., the Secretary-Treasurer of Local 727, asserted, “It’s evident that management is attempting to delay an agreement concerning a plan for our animal care specialists amid this work stoppage. This blatant tactic threatens the lawful rights of our members to strike.”

To further complicate matters, the union highlighted that not all animals would be visible to the public during the strike, leading to calls for the zoo to temporarily close until a resolution is reached. The union maintains that without proper caretakers, both custodial and maintenance personnel will be absent during this time.

In a dedicated effort to reach an amicable settlement, the union presented a comprehensive proposal during negotiations, yet it was categorically rejected without any counteroffer from the zoo. The discontent surrounding the negotiation process reflects a larger issue of how essential workers, like those at the zoo, are being treated.

Teamsters Local 727 represents nearly 10,000 workers in the Chicago area, advocating for fair wages and working conditions. The importance of their role, especially in a beloved institution like the Brookfield Zoo, cannot be overstated as they ensure not just their livelihood but that of the animals under their care.

If you're in the Chicago area, consider the implications of visiting the zoo during this time. According to union leaders, a visit may only exacerbate the working conditions for those who remain. For continued updates, visit Teamsters Local 727’s website.
