Ken Matsubara: 'Seiseiryuten' Exhibition at Wako Gallery
Starting from October 9 to October 19, 2023, Wako Gallery in Ginza will host a solo exhibition titled 'Seiseiryuten' by the renowned Japanese artist Ken Matsubara. This captivating exhibition takes place at the Seiko House Hall and represents a profound journey through Matsubara's artistic evolution, reflecting the influences he has absorbed over the years, especially from his mentor, Kiko Inoue.
The Theme of 'Seiseiryuten'
The title 'Seiseiryuten' translates to the ‘Transcendent Flow of Life,’ a concept that Matsubara deeply explores through his works. Inspired by the famous Japanese ink painting 'Seiseiryuten' by the master Yokoyama Taikan, Matsubara’s art captures the essence of life—illustrating a single raindrop that starts its journey, ultimately transforming into a river, then a vast ocean, and finally soaring as a dragon into the sky. This philosophical interpretation serves as a backdrop for observing the intricate connection between nature and our lives.
Exhibition Highlights
Attendees will have the opportunity to view over 30 artworks, ranging from traditional styles to modern interpretations. Each piece encapsulates Matsubara's artistic journey, showcasing how he intertwines nature's grandeur with personal experiences and sentiments. Notably, some featured works include:
- - 'Sun and Moon in the Sky': This four-panel screen depicts the landscape Matsubara experienced at Muroto Cape, symbolizing the power and tranquility of nature.
- - 'Scenery (Kei)': A breathtaking portrayal of mountains and valleys that manifest a harmony of feeling and experience, transcending mere observation.
- - 'Taku': The genesis of a flowing stream depicted through the initial drop of rain, signifying the start of Seiseiryuten's transformative journey.
- - 'Shoku': An articulation of the afternoon sun tilting westward, evoking imagery of a pure land with symbols of light and water representing life.
- - 'Mio': A magical scene capturing a moonlit night at sea, where the moonlight forms a path of shimmering light on the water, illustrating Matsubara’s narrative style.
