Exploring Dali's Rich Heritage: A Journey of Youth

On July 17th, a vibrant delegation of youth from China and the United States embarked on an enlightening journey to Dali, located in Yunnan Province. This initiative aimed to delve into Dali's profound history, bridging the past with the current trajectory of modern development.

The visit commenced with an exploration of Dali Old Town, a hub of rich cultural and historical significance. Participants engaged in a unique experience by learning how to prepare the traditional Bai people's Three-Course Tea—a ceremony that embodies deep cultural roots and social gathering. The delegation also ventured to the ancient town of Xizhou, where they observed the harmonious coexistence of contemporary tourism and indigenous lifestyles, a vital aspect of Dali’s charm.

In the historical Yunnanyi Village, they received firsthand accounts of the village's significance along the Tea Horse Road and its contributions during World War II. Tyler James Smith, a participant, reflected on the underappreciated narratives of WWII history. He noted, "Hearing stories of different countries working together despite cultural variations is incredibly inspirational. Many such stories have been left untold, mainly due to the complexity of the WWII era. Visiting museums and experiencing these stories personally holds immense value."

Furthermore, the delegation visited the Xiangyun Economic and Technological Development Zone, where they witnessed how advancements in green and low-carbon initiatives are propelling the region's progress. Valerie Marie, a member of the group, expressed her enthusiasm for renewable energy. She shared, "Having recently started my studies in energy transitions, I find it fascinating to hear about China’s commitment to renewable energy and its ambitious carbon neutrality targets by 2060."

As the youth delegation meandered along the beautiful Erhai Lake Ecological Corridor, participant Bai Yiwen summarized her experience poignantly: "I would term this journey as 'to be continued' because my bond with Yunnan is far from over. For our U.S. friends, this visit marks merely an introduction to the wonders Yunnan holds. I sincerely hope they seize more opportunities in the future to explore more of its cities and immerse themselves in its diverse culture and traditions."

The Dali visit marked just the beginning of the delegation's journey, with plans to further explore Beijing for a mix of more tours and cultural exchanges. This remarkable event was co-organized by the China International Communications Group (CICG) Center for the Americas, alongside the U.S.-based International Student Conferences, showcasing the potential of youth collaboration and understanding between countries. This event signifies not only cultural exchange but also a commitment to shared global futures.
