World Vocational and Technical Education Conference Highlights Focus on Career Training and Global Integration
The 2024 World Vocational and Technical Education Development Conference, held this week in Tianjin, China, brought together around 1,000 delegates from around the globe. Stefania Giannini, the UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Education, emphasized during her speech that vocational education is a catalyst for change. Referring to UNESCO's recent recommendations on education for peace, human rights, and sustainable development, she illustrated the significant role that vocational education plays in facilitating these transformations. Giannini championed the need for increased investment and innovation within vocational education to address global challenges, asserting that skills are a passport to navigating today’s complex world.
China's Minister of Education Huai Jinpeng articulated a vision for vocational education that is inclusive, industry-oriented, innovative, intelligent, and international. He stressed the importance of adapting vocational education to prevailing trends while maintaining its unique characteristics. Huai highlighted the need to create development goals that align with evolving opportunities and challenges in the sector, fostering breakthroughs in innovation.
Moreover, in a remarkable effort to enhance the conference organization, the Tianjin Youth League mobilized 1,448 young volunteers from nine universities, including Nankai University. These volunteers assumed over 30 different roles, including guest registration, coordination of conference activities, translation services, media reception, and medical support. This initiative not only facilitated the smooth running of the conference but also underscored the active involvement of youth in community engagement and global dialogues.
