Okayama University's New Accreditation for Japanese Language Education
In a significant development for language education, Okayama University, headquartered in Okayama City, has officially received registration from the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) as a training institution for Japanese language teachers. This registration pertains to the university's Minor Course in Japanese Language Education, effective May 30, 2025.
The approval as a Registered Practicum Training Institution and Registered Japanese Language Teacher Training Institution marks a crucial step towards enhancing Japanese language education quality in Japan. Under this new framework, students enrolled in Okayama University from the 2025 academic year onwards, as well as course participants from 2026 onwards, will have the opportunity to complete their studies in the Japanese Language Education Course and be exempt from the foundational exam and practical training required to obtain their Japanese Language Teacher registration.
This development comes at a time when the need for proficient Japanese language instructors is paramount, particularly due to the increasing number of foreign residents and the corresponding demand for quality language education. In May 2023, the Law on Certification and Management of Japanese Language Education Institutions was enacted, aiming to ensure high educational standards for foreign learners. The law introduces a certification system for Japanese language education institutions and establishes a registration system for Japanese language teachers, allowing for tailored education to meet learners' diverse needs.
To become a Registered Japanese Language Teacher, candidates must pass the Japanese Language Teacher Examination—which includes both foundational and applied tests—and complete practical training conducted by MEXT-registered institutions. Moreover, participants who finish a training course from authorized training institutions may be exempted from the foundational examination upon application. It is noteworthy that only credits earned from the second semester of 2025 onwards will count towards the completion requirements for this course.
The impact of this accreditation extends beyond just the immediate benefit for students at Okayama University. By producing qualified Japanese language educators, the institution is contributing to a broader goal of enhancing the quality of Japanese language instruction throughout the country. As Japan continues to integrate a more multicultural and multilingual populace, having a robust framework for teacher training can address the crucial needs of learners from diverse backgrounds.
The Japanese Language Education Course remains committed to addressing educational challenges posed by the growing foreign population, helping to build a competent workforce of educators who can foster effective communication and cultural exchange between Japan and the world.
