In a remarkable show of unity and cultural celebration, Ojibwe singer-songwriter Shy-Anne Hovorka has released her latest single titled "Raise My Fist." Inspiration Behind the Music

The inception of "Raise My Fist" dates back three years when Hovorka attended a poignant cultural sensitivity gathering at Long Lake #58. It was there that Chief Judy Desmoulin shared her personal stories of resilience while growing up under the Indian Agent system.

Hovorka was deeply moved by Desmoulin’s bravery, especially her childhood determination to confront the Indian Agent. This compelling narrative lingered in Hovorka's mind, leading her to record the song's initial chorus on her phone during the drive home. "By the time I pulled into my driveway, 'Raise My Fist' already existed in its simplest form," she recalls.

Yet, instead of rushing to produce the track on her own, Hovorka decided to evolve it into a community project. The result is a song that symbolizes collective courage and collaboration.

A Community Project

What started as a solo endeavor grew into a multifaceted project, with participation from Indigenous singers, youth, dancers, and various community members along with settler allies. Each individual contributed their unique talents, infusing the song with a diverse range of cultural expressions. The recording not only melds traditional drumming with modern elements but is further enriched by the music video, showcasing vignettes of dancers and families sharing their heritage.
