Shanghai Electric Advances Renewable Energy in Romania with New 342 MW Photovoltaic Project
On October 1, 2025, Shanghai Electric reached a significant milestone by finalizing the second phase of a groundbreaking photovoltaic (PV) project in Parau, Romania. This 342 MW project, a joint venture with Econergy Renewable Energy Ltd, represents a forward leap in Romania's clean energy sector, further bolstering the nation's sustainability efforts.
As Shanghai Electric's fourth PV undertaking in the country, the Parau Phase II project aims to deliver clean energy to both residential and commercial consumers, reinforcing the company's commitment to green energy development in Central and Eastern Europe. Mr. Wu Lei, Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of Shanghai Electric Group, highlighted the company's intention to leverage its technological capabilities in wind power, photovoltaics, and energy storage to facilitate the region's transition to green energy.
The Parau Phase II project follows the successful implementation of the Parau Phase I project, which had a capacity of 91.4 MW and was completed under an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract. This initial phase received its Provisional Acceptance Certificate in November 2024 and now generates green electricity for approximately 70,000 households, contributing to a reduction of about 6,800 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually.
Local stakeholders are optimistic about the project’s impact. Andrea Loi, the Vice President of Operations at Econergy, expressed confidence in Shanghai Electric's expertise and experience, noting that the collaboration would ensure the successful progression and commissioning of this landmark project. With a growing number of renewable energy projects, Shanghai Electric seeks to expand its influence and capacity within Romania and across the Central and Eastern European region.
Presently, Shanghai Electric's portfolio in Romania boasts a cumulative capacity of around 550 MW. This includes the Schultu 56 MW PV project and the Ovidi's 60 MW PV EPC project, which is currently under construction, bolstering the company's credibility and impact in the renewable energy landscape.
On the same day, Mr. Wu Lei participated in high-level discussions with Romanian officials, including Chen Feng, the Chinese Ambassador to Romania, and Istvan-Lorant Antal, the Chairman of the Romanian Energy Committee. Antal emphasized Romania's active pursuit of energy structure transformation, particularly in photovoltaics and energy storage. He reinforced the importance of partnerships with outstanding firms like Shanghai Electric to jointly develop renewable energy initiatives.
To further strengthen strategic relations, Mr. Wu Lei also met with executives from Austria’s OMV Group, exploring new collaboration opportunities within the energy sector. This engagement underlines Shanghai Electric’s pivotal role in advancing Romania's renewable energy transition.
In conclusion, the Parau Phase II project not only solidifies Shanghai Electric's presence in Romania but also stands as a testament to the country's commitment to a sustainable future. Through strategic partnerships and advanced technological applications, this project is set to play a crucial role in Romania's transition towards green energy solutions, heralding a new age of environmental sustainability.
