Oklahoma's Leap into Advanced Air Mobility

In a groundbreaking move towards shaping the future of aviation, the Oklahoma Department of Aerospace and Aeronautics (ODAA) has recently signed a contract that marks the state's inaugural investment in advanced air mobility (AAM) infrastructure. This strategic initiative is set to enhance airspace management systems and provide cutting-edge solutions for automatic detect-and-avoid technologies in the increasingly prominent drone industry.

Collaborating for Innovation

The ODAA has chosen local firm Vigilant Aerospace, headquartered in Oklahoma City, to implement this extensive system on behalf of the Oklahoma Space Industry Development Authority (OSIDA). This collaboration aims to establish Oklahoma as a premier testing ground not only for civilian drone operations but also for developments in military drone technology. The ultimate objective is to streamline the path for AAM operations, including electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) air taxis and autonomous cargo aircraft.

Under the terms of the multi-year agreement, Vigilant Aerospace will deploy the first FlightHorizon system at the Clinton-Sherman Airport, which also houses the Oklahoma Air & Space Port. This site is notable as it is one of only 14 FAA-licensed spaceports across the nation. The project entails the integration of multiple mobile air traffic surveillance radars, enhancing remote monitoring capabilities and facilitating Uncrewed Traffic Management (UTM).

Modernizing Air Traffic Management

The FlightHorizon system will revolutionize airspace monitoring by replacing traditional visual observers with electronic observers. This upgrade will eliminate the need for chase planes during long-range, beyond visual line-of-sight (BVLOS) operations of uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS). Such an advancement is particularly pertinent for high-speed drone flights and represents a critical shift in operational protocols.

Funding for this ambitious project was allocated by the Oklahoma Legislature in 2022 through the Preserving Rural Economic Prosperity (PREP) fund, illustrating the state's commitment to enhancing UAS and AAM infrastructure. The aim is to equip OSIDA and associated entities with the necessary technology to support the integration of advanced aviation systems across the state.

The FlightHorizon initiative will not only benefit the Oklahoma Air & Space Port near Burns Flat but will also serve as a mobile launchpad for pioneering protocols for AAM operations at various potential sites. Moreover, the system’s design allows for easy relocation, adapting to the specific needs of different regions within the state.

Comprehensive Airspace Monitoring

At the core of FlightHorizon is a scalable, cloud-based software platform that works in conjunction with various air traffic surveillance radars produced by DeTect, Inc., a critical partner in this endeavor. The system will utilize data collected from mobile radar trailers, aircraft transponders, drone telemetry, Remote ID drone beacons, and FAA data to create a comprehensive situational awareness framework for both remote pilots and airspace managers.
