Hafslund Celsio is not only the largest district heating supplier in Norway but also operates the country’s most extensive waste-to-energy plant. Project Overview



The awarded contract encompasses a complete suite of services including engineering, procurement, construction, installation, and commissioning (EPCIC) of a state-of-the-art carbon capture plant. The project will also integrate a liquefaction system, temporary storage, and a loading facility situated directly at the waste incineration location. Furthermore, the scheme includes provisions for intermediate CO2 storage along with a ship loading system at the Oslo harbor. This layout will ensure that captured CO2 can be effectively transported to the Northern Lights permanent storage site located on the Norwegian continental shelf.

When the project becomes operational—expected by the third quarter of 2029—it aims to achieve an impressive capacity of capturing approximately 350,000 metric tons of CO2 annually. This carbon capture capacity showcases a robust commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and advancing sustainability.

The contract announcement comes after Hafslund Celsio successfully navigated a cost-reduction phase for the initiative.
