Ebara Corporation and Chino City Sign Agreement for 100% Renewable Water Supply During Power Outages

Ebara Corporation Boosts Water Infrastructure Resilience with Renewable Energy

Ebara Corporation, based in Chuo-ku, Tokyo, along with Chino City, has united in a groundbreaking initiative aimed at combatting climate change. This collaboration features the establishment of hydropower generation equipment at the Haharamata Water Supply Reservoir. The innovative use of this facility not only allows for eco-friendly energy production but also serves as an emergency power source, facilitating operations during power outages.

Background of the Initiative

With a long history in infrastructure development, having collaborated with numerous municipalities and supplying various plant equipment, Ebara has positioned itself as a leader in energy solutions based on renewable resources, including solar and hydropower projects. The implementation of the Feed-in Tariff (FIT) system allows them to share a portion of the revenue from power sales with the city. Selected as a contractor through a public proposal process in fiscal 2023, Ebara has initiated preparations for this sustainable operation, moving towards realizing this vital energy project.

Project Details

The project transcends conventional energy generation as it is designed to operate autonomously during emergencies when conventional power fails. The hydropower facility is capable of running entirely on renewable energy, ensuring uninterrupted function of the Haharamata Water Reservoir. Such capabilities are rare, making this project a pioneering model within Japan's water supply infrastructure.

Furthermore, the initiative lends additional support to disaster relief efforts by offering steam showers—allowing evacuees access to hygiene facilities—for free. The installation of portable power storage units enhances this setup, enabling mobile phone charging and steam shower operations. The hydropower generation—boasting a capacity of 13kW—is estimated to produce an annual output equivalent to 108,000 kWh, enough to serve around 27 households. Notably, around 9% of the revenue generated will contribute to Chino City's budget.

The signing ceremony witnessed participation from local dignitaries, including the President of Ebara and the Mayor of Chino, symbolizing a commitment to regional resilience and sustainable development.

Future Prospects

Ebara Corporation's aspirations extend beyond this initial cooperation. Aiming to upgrade their energy-intensive pump systems utilized in water supply and disaster recovery, Ebara is committed to offering energy-efficient solutions to users while considering environmental impacts and disaster preparedness. This initiative aligns with the company’s dedication to sustainable development goals (SDGs), particularly addressing climate action, industry innovation, and partnership for the goals by enhancing robust environmental infrastructure and promoting a circular economy.

Contribution to SDGs

This collaborative project directly contributes to the realization of several SDGs, notably Goals 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), 13 (Climate Action), and 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
