Santa Clara Family Health Plan Hosts Successful Older Adult Resource Fair
On May 17, 2025, the Santa Clara Family Health Plan (SCFHP) held its third annual Older Adult Resource Fair at the Blanca Alvarado Resource Center in San Jose, California. This event, aimed at adults aged 60 and above, coincided with the national celebration of Older Adults Month. Approximately 70 attendees took part in this enriching experience, which featured over 20 informational booths by various health and wellness partners.
Highlighting the theme "Flip the Script on Aging," the event included a presentation by Collin Bruce, cofounder and CEO of Community Cycles of California (CCoCA). Bruce, who is also a passionate advocate for active aging at age 75, shared insights from his personal journey and emphasized that aging does not preclude engaging in activities one loves, such as cycling. "The question is how can we age gracefully?" Bruce explained. "Riding gives me that vehicle. Being mobile on a bike is an interesting way to see life and be in nature. It's how I've survived my old age."
Bruce's organization operates as a nonprofit providing free bikes, repairs, and training sessions aimed at enhancing mobility and independence for older adults. His inspiring message resonated with the attendees, encouraging them to embrace their passions as they age.
In addition to Bruce's engaging presentation, attendees were treated to various resources and activities, including health screenings, workshops, and a healthy cooking demonstration led by Chef Paul Ladewig from Nutrition Therapy Essentials. This comprehensive resource fair gave participants the opportunity to learn more about healthy lifestyle habits and access valuable health information tailored to their needs.
Dr. Ria Paul, the Chief Medical Officer of SCFHP and a practicing geriatrician, expressed pride in supporting their diverse aging community through this event. “Growing older doesn't mean giving up the activities you enjoyed in your youth. With the right mental and physical health choices, seniors can remain active and healthy,” she stated.
SCFHP continues to honor the Older Adults Month movement, which aims to acknowledge the societal contributions of elders, promote healthy aging practices, and reaffirm the organization's commitment to serving older adults in Santa Clara County. Since its inception in 1997, SCFHP has emphasized equitable access to high-quality health care, improving the overall wellness of the community it serves.
Moreover, the Blanca Alvarado Community Resource Center, named after a local leader and social justice advocate, provides a welcoming environment for SCFHP members and East San José residents. The center collaborates with various partners to provide culturally competent health and wellness programs, thereby enhancing access to critical resources.
