Expansion of Pediatric Mental Health Services

The Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital Foundation, a prominent healthcare institution in Hollywood, Florida, has been awarded a significant $230,000 grant from the Simply Healthcare Foundation. This funding is aimed at enhancing the New Solutions: A Pediatric Mental Health Treatment and Suicide Prevention Program. The initiative is designed to ensure that children and their families have access to vital mental health services without needing to enter a traditional hospital environment.

Addressing Critical Gaps in Care

Launched on July 1, the three-year grant will allow New Solutions to offer support to an estimated 267 individuals, directly addressing a crucial gap in mental health care between emergency psychiatric treatment and less acute, community-based support. Often, children and adolescents facing mental health crises find themselves in emergency departments where they may not meet the rigorous medical criteria for hospitalization. This program aims to bridge that gap by providing timely and effective treatment alternatives.

Tim Curtin, Vice President of Community Services at Memorial Healthcare System, remarked, "This grant allows us to reach more children and families with the right level of care when they need it most. By facilitating immediate access to behavioral health services, we can assist families in navigating challenging situations and pave the way towards long-term well-being."

Swift Transition to Care

When children or adolescents are evaluated in the emergency department and do not require hospitalization or an involuntary examination under Florida's Baker Act, the hospital's care coordination team steps in. They provide an immediate and seamless referral to New Solutions, with the goal of connecting families to essential services within 24 hours.

Once enrolled in the program, families receive comprehensive support for a period of four to six months, thanks to a dedicated full-time therapist and case manager. These professionals provide personalized care, ensuring families remain engaged in the treatment process. Services are flexible and may occur in the comforts of home, at school, or another familiar setting. Support can involve a wide range of therapeutic methods and family resources, such as care coordination, parenting groups, and community referrals.

Marilyn Camerota, Senior Director of Community Services at Memorial Healthcare System, highlighted the program's objective: "New Solutions is supported through philanthropic funding. Our aim is to eliminate barriers to care, boost participation in treatment, and minimize the need for involuntary holds in situations where a less restrictive support level is sufficient. We are proud to back a program that delivers accessible mental health resources straight to children and families, helping them stay connected to their homes, schools, and communities."

Raising Awareness and Capacity

In addition to improving service delivery, the grant will enhance New Solutions' capacity and increase awareness about the mental health resources available to local families. This is particularly timely as the announcement coincides with Suicide Prevention Month, observed annually in September, which encourages open discussions surrounding mental health and provides individuals with access to crucial, potentially lifesaving resources.
