Addressing Experience Inequality Through Collaborative Events
On June 27, 2026, Bunkyo Gakuin University will proudly host the inaugural 'Smile Concert', a unique collaboration with the social welfare organization, Support 21, and the Pacific Philharmonia Tokyo. This initiative aims to combat the growing issue of experience inequality among children. In today's society, many children face disparities in access to cultural, artistic, and natural experiences due to various socioeconomic factors. This event is designed to bridge that gap by providing children with an enriching experience through music and food.
The Concept Behind the 'Smile Concert'
The 'Smile Concert' is part of the 'Children’s Music Cafeteria' project initiated by Support 21, an organization that has been dedicated to supporting children from refugee and foreign backgrounds for over 30 years. This project aims to combine 'nutritious meals' with 'live music performances' to foster both the physical and emotional well-being of children. The event will feature a full orchestra performance and free snacks provided afterward, creating an inviting space for children who often miss out on artistic engagements in their daily lives.
Bunkyo Gakuin University has been actively involved in promoting cultural and artistic enrichment through music, having signed a collaboration agreement with the Pacific Philharmonia Tokyo in 2024. This partnership has allowed for innovative projects aimed at enhancing students' exposure to quality music, including various outreach programs for local schools. Through these efforts, the university aspires to cultivate the sensibility of local children and support Target 4 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for quality education and Target 10 for reducing inequality.
