A Captivating Blend of Humor and Emotion
The work is crafted by Kenji Higashi, a prominent figure in the theater community known for his detailed set designs and powerful ensemble narratives, reflecting his own upbringing in coal-mining towns and rural areas. His plays often draw from local themes in Fukuoka, embodying a universal struggle as characters confront their past traumas while striving for survival. This production is set to delve deeper into the intricacies of human emotion, focusing on the internal conflicts experienced by its characters.
Synopsis
Set in the bustling streets of Hakata in 1946, shortly after Japan's surrender, the narrative is woven around the life of Matsuo Daikichi, who returns home from the war only to find unexpected living arrangements. His wife, Yayoi, has mistakenly believed him to be dead and has already conducted a funeral. However, the twist reveals that Yayoi has been waiting for Yusuke, the son of Banba, who is living with them, complicating their household dynamics.
In the world surrounded by the aftermath of war and uncertainties, Daikichi, Yayoi, Banba, and Kome commence a new chapter of coexistence, battling their individual pasts and hopes.
