Joint Efforts for Gallium Production in Australia
Sojitz Corporation, in collaboration with the Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC), has embarked on an initiative to produce gallium in Australia. Through a joint venture company, they have signed a contract with Alcoa of Australia, a subsidiary of the world's largest alumina producer. The contract involves a feasibility study focusing on gallium production at Alcoa's existing alumina refining facilities located in Western Australia.
The joint venture aims to verify the commercial viability of gallium production and expects to make a final investment decision by the end of 2025, aiming to commence production in 2026. The gallium produced will be primarily marketed to nations with significant demand, particularly Japan.
Gallium has been classified as one of the critical minerals by various governments, including Japan, Australia, the United States, and European nations. It plays a vital role in modern technologies, being used in LEDs, solar power cells, and compound semiconductors. With the anticipated growth in semiconductor demand globally, the need for gallium is set to increase significantly.
The selected sites for the gallium production equipment are Alcoa's Wagerup and Pinjarra alumina refineries, located south of Perth in Western Australia. Gallium naturally occurs only in small amounts in bauxite and zinc ores, requiring extraction as a by-product during the refining process of alumina and zinc. This initiative focuses on securing a stable supply of gallium by collaborating with JOGMEC, which has been involved in ensuring resource security since 1980, when Sojitz engaged in alumina refining.
Sojitz's commitment in the metal and resource sector also extends towards achieving carbon neutrality and supporting growth in emerging countries. The increasing shift towards digitalization necessitates the procurement of essential minerals for semiconductors and battery materials. This project reflects their strategy to anticipate societal needs and establish a long-term, stable resource supply system.
The collaboration with JOGMEC and Alcoa is set to enhance the supply chain for gallium, focusing on stability and diversification. Sojitz is optimistic that through this venture, they can contribute to a dependable supply of gallium, which is becoming ever more essential in high-technology applications.
