Amazon Bioinnovation Challenge: Transforming Biodiversity Into Impactful Businesses

Idesam Launches Global Challenge for Amazon Biodiversity

The Instituto para a Conservação e Desenvolvimento Sustentável da Amazônia (Idesam) has made a significant move in its ongoing efforts to link economic development with conservation in the Amazon. On May 14, 2026, they launched the Amazon Bioinnovation Challenge, a global initiative that encourages researchers and innovators to transform the scientific knowledge of the Amazon's biodiversity into profitable and sustainable business solutions.

The Challenge and Its Goals

The challenge invites applications from professionals with expertise in research and development (R&D) across various sectors, including cosmetics, food, and biobased materials. This initiative, one of the largest of its kind dedicated to the bioeconomy, will focus on creating practical applications that not only preserve the rainforest but also uplift local communities.

"This challenge is about converting scientific knowledge into practical solutions that help preserve the forest while creating sustainable economic opportunities," said Paulo Simonetti, head of the Open Innovation and ESG division at Idesam. By blending cutting-edge science with traditional local knowledge, the program aims to develop impactful solutions that generate economic value.

Key Focus Areas

During the challenge, participants will explore six main areas, including:
  • - Development of biomaterials from local rubber
  • - Utilization of açaí by-products
  • - Promotion of innovations using Amazonian oils such as andiroba, copaíba, and buriti.

Idesam will initially select 25 R&D specialists and 25 innovators who will collaborate to create solutions within their chosen focus areas. Out of these, ten teams will have the opportunity to participate in a 15-day immersive experience in the Amazon, including activities in Manaus and surrounding local communities, all expenses covered by Idesam.

Support for Participants

Selected participants will receive both financial support and technical assistance. R&D specialists are expected to receive monthly grants ranging from $650 to $1,300 over six months, along with access to laboratory facilities, mentorship, and around $20,000 per team for testing and validation of their ideas. Furthermore, the top three teams will be awarded prizes totaling between $20,000 and $40,000, alongside continued support for their business development, including legal advice and access to market and investment networks.

Financed by the Bezos Earth Fund and supported by partners like Penn State University, this initiative aims to align conservation efforts with economic development in one of the most biodiverse regions on the planet.

Application Process

The deadline for submissions for this exciting initiative is June 30, 2026. Participants are encouraged to apply and join a network of innovators, entrepreneurs, and scientists committed to fostering sustainable practices that benefit both the environment and local economies.

The Amazon region is not only a critical ecological zone but also has immense potential for innovations in sustainable bioeconomics. Challenges like the Amazon Bioinnovation Challenge are essential to harmonizing conservation efforts with economic opportunities in the region, ensuring both the biodiversity and local communities thrive together.
