Michter's Distillery Unveils 2025 Legacy Series Whiskeys
In an exciting announcement,
Michter's Distillery is set to launch its
2025 Legacy Series whiskeys, specifically the
Shenk's Homestead Kentucky Sour Mash Whiskey and the
Bomberger's Declaration Kentucky Straight Bourbon, this coming July. These two exceptional whiskeys, dated with the year of bottling, will make up two-thirds of the Michter's Legacy Series, alongside a third whiskey called
Bomberger's PFG™ (Precision Fine Grain)—a notable addition this year.
Joseph J. Magliocco, the chairman of Michter's, emphasizes the care and effort that goes into creating these Legacy Series releases, stating, "Our Michter's production team works very hard to make our Legacy Series releases special."
The origins of Shenk's distillery date back to
1753, when Swiss Mennonite farmer John Shenk founded it in Pennsylvania. Over time, the distillery was renamed to Bomberger's Distillery in the 1800s, eventually becoming known as Michter's Distillery in the mid-20th century. The Legacy Series serves as a tribute to this rich heritage.
Unique Production Techniques
Master Distiller
Dan McKee has expressed his enthusiasm for the new Shenk’s release, highlighting the whiskey's robust and lingering spicy notes. This particular batch has undergone maturation in French oak barrels that are roasted but not charred, using wood sourced from the
Vosges mountains, which significantly enhances the rye character.
As for the Bomberger's Declaration, Master of Maturation
Andrea Wilson explains that understanding wood and aging processes is vital for shaping its unique profile. "I am particularly pleased with the result. Again, Chinquapin barrels have contributed to Bomberger's Declaration's signature flavor. For this year’s release, we used a variety of barrel types made from naturally air-seasoned wood, with aging periods ranging from 18 months to 5 years. This variety uniquely alters the wood's chemistry during maturation, resulting in a bold and multidimensional tasting experience."
The alcohol content for Shenk's Homestead is set at
91.2 proof (45.6% alc/vol), retailing at
$110. On the other hand, the Bomberger's Declaration has a higher proof of
108 (54% alc/vol), and carries a retail price of
$120.
