The world of festivals is evolving, and Yanolja Research has unveiled the first-ever Global Festival Attractiveness Index, more commonly known as the Yanolja Festival Index. This groundbreaking framework serves to objectively assess the appeal of 560 major international festivals by leveraging massive amounts of multilingual social media data.

A Comprehensive Evaluation Framework



Yanolja Research, in collaboration with the CHRIBA Institute at Purdue University and the HT Analytics Center at Kyung Hee University in Seoul, developed this index. The evaluation of these grand international events integrates user-generated content (UGC) in 14 languages, sourced from Brandwatch, providing a multifaceted perspective on festival engagement.

In this inaugural edition, Coachella has emerged as the global leader, but European festivals have demonstrated remarkable competitiveness. The Spanish festival Mad Cool has claimed the title of the top-ranked event in Europe, standing at an impressive fourth spot globally.

The Allure of European Festivals



The 2026 evaluation highlights Europe’s significant influence within the global festival landscape. The Hungarian festival Sziget follows close behind, ranking sixth, and the world-famous Venice Carnival comes in at seventh. These results reflect their ability to captivate an international audience through unique and immersive experiences. Other notable mentions include La Tomatina in Spain at eighth, the British Summer Time Festival in the UK at ninth, and the Pinkpop Festival in the Netherlands completing the top ten.

Further successes can be seen with Germany's Oktoberfest at twelfth and the Defqon.1 festival in the Netherlands at seventeenth. These outcomes underscore Europe’s capability to deliver captivating entertainment, rich cultural authenticity, and unforgettable experiences that resonate with visitors across global markets.

A Data-Driven Approach to Festival Appeal



The Yanolja Festival Index utilizes large-scale social data reflecting the actual perspectives of attendees rather than relying solely on organizer-reported figures. This index evaluates festivals based on two primary criteria: the festival's allure, which captures attendee sentiment and emotional reactions, and the festival’s reputation, which gauges global visibility through discussion volume and linguistic diversity. These indicators are then grouped into three assessment axes: festival content and experiences, festival atmosphere and emotion, along with operational practicalities and infrastructure.

Dr. Soo Cheong Jang, a professor at Purdue University and director of Yanolja Research, emphasized the merit of this data-centric approach in evaluating the quality of experiences referenced from the digital footprints of real participants. He stated, “The success of European festivals signifies the universal appeal of authentic cultural experiences and highlights the importance of promoting this unique value to international travelers.”
