SM Group Enhances J.O.B.S. Program
In a significant move to address the skills shortage in the Philippines, the SM Group is ramping up its J.O.B.S. program—Jobs Opportunities Building Skills. This initiative aims to provide not just job opportunities but also necessary skill development through a collaboration with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA). With nationwide job fairs, the program incorporates direct access to TESDA-accredited training programs, blending employment access with relevant skill-building workshops.
Frederic C. DyBuncio, President and CEO of SM Investments Corporation, emphasized the company’s commitment to enhancing the employability of Filipinos. He stated, “Just as we at SM rely on the competence of our people to grow, we also want to contribute to the country's goal of helping Filipinos secure meaningful employment.” This dual approach not only addresses job placement but also fortifies the workforce's readiness to adapt to the changing demands of the job market.
TESDA Deputy Director Nelly Dillera highlighted the milestone nature of this partnership, remarking that this initiative could significantly improve sustainable livelihoods. “By combining employment access with targeted training opportunities, we create a more responsive and inclusive pathway to sustainable livelihoods—right where communities live, shop, and gather.”
Since the launch of J.O.B.S. in 2024, the program has facilitated over 300 job fairs nationwide, impacting more than 180,000 job seekers. Impressively, over 24,000 individuals have been hired on the spot during these events, showcasing the program's efficacy in bridging the employment gap and promoting workforce development.
The SM Group's initiative does not stop at job fairs; it is also broadening its collaborations with sector-specific organizations. For instance, partnerships focused on supply chains, logistics, and retail are currently in development. Furthermore, joint efforts with the Department of Health (DOH) aim to bolster recruitment efforts in the healthcare sector, addressing the pressing need for skilled workers in this vital field. Additionally, SM’s participation in career fairs held by the People Management Association of the Philippines (PMAP) is another tactic employed to access a broader pool of talent.
As jobs become increasingly competitive, the importance of equipping individuals with the right skills cannot be overstated. The SM Group’s J.O.B.S. program is exemplary in combining immediate job opportunities with long-term skill development strategies. In an economy where adaptability is key, such programs play a critical role in preparing the workforce to meet the challenges of tomorrow.
This initiative not only stands to benefit job seekers but also fosters community growth by ensuring that the skills taught are aligned with market needs—ultimately contributing to the socio-economic advancement of the Philippines.
