Joy D. Calloway Takes the Helm as President & CEO of the Black Women's Health Imperative
The Black Women's Health Imperative (BWHI) has recently announced the appointment of Joy D. Calloway, MHSA, MBA, as its new President and Chief Executive Officer, effective October 6, 2025. This significant leadership transition comes at a crucial time when Black women's health needs are more urgent than ever. Calloway, with nearly three decades of experience in nonprofit leadership and a commitment to equity-driven strategies, aims to drive impactful changes across health systems that focus on the unique needs of Black women and girls.
A Legacy of Leadership and Advocacy
Before joining BWHI, Calloway served as the Executive Director of the National Medical Association (NMA), the oldest and largest organization representing Black physicians in the United States. Her previous experience includes leading Planned Parenthood of Greater New York, where she oversaw a pivotal transition that stabilized operations and garnered public trust. As CEO of New Center Community Mental Health Services in Detroit, she was instrumental in founding a Federally Qualified Health Center in Oakland County, Michigan, highlighting her dedication to enhancing health access in underserved communities.
