Breakthru Beverage Teamsters Celebrate Historic First Contract Ratification in California

Teamsters at Breakthru Beverage Celebrate Major Victory

In a remarkable turn of events, drivers at Breakthru Beverage's Commerce facility have ratified their first union contract, marking a significant milestone for the Teamsters Local 166 in California. This historic agreement follows a one-day strike held on Monday, demonstrating the resilience and determination of the workers involved.

Mike Pharris, the Secretary-Treasurer of Local 166, expressed his pride in this achievement, emphasizing that it represents the first Teamsters contract at any Breakthru Beverage location across California. Pharris credited the courage and tenacity of the employees for this win, stating, "This isn't just a first contract for this facility — it's the first Teamsters contract at this company in the entire state of California."

The negotiated two-year contract comes with several important advancements for the 45 union workers at Breakthru. Key provisions include substantial wage increases, safeguarding against unfair reprimands and terminations, as well as establishing seniority rights — vital elements that enhance job security and compensation.

Roger Chaidez, a veteran member of the Teamsters bargaining committee and a 13-year employee at Breakthru, expressed the significance of this contract, saying, "Now the company has to respect us. Before, we didn't have a voice, but now we do. This is a big deal for everyone here."

The agreement will be renegotiated concurrently with the California Statewide Liquor Master Agreement, ensuring that the workers’ rights and benefits remain a priority in future discussions.

In the lead-up to this successful outcome, the threat of a longer strike loomed, particularly as workers feared celebrating Thanksgiving away from their families. However, the swift action and unity demonstrated by the Teamsters turned the situation around, culminating in their hard-fought victory. Chaidez extended his gratitude to Local 166 Organizer Ruben Luna for his dedication and support throughout the negotiation process.

Teamsters Local 166 has a robust representation across various sectors within the Inland Empire and San Diego, advocating for workers' rights and better working conditions.

This achievement not only underscores the collective power of union organizing but also serves as a beacon of hope for workers across the country, showcasing what can be achieved through solidarity and resolve. As the Teamsters continue to strengthen their presence in California, they pave the way for improved industry standards and protections for workers everywhere.
