Japan Aims to Compete in the Homeless World Cup 2025 in Norway

Japan's Journey to the Homeless World Cup 2025

In an extraordinary effort to empower individuals facing social hardships, the Diversity Soccer Association, based in Shinjuku, Tokyo, is geared up for a significant mission: to represent Japan at the Homeless World Cup 2025, set to take place in Norway. This international street soccer tournament is not just a competition; it’s a shining opportunity for participants, often experiencing homelessness or other adversities, to reclaim their sense of purpose and belonging.

Understanding the Homeless World Cup

Founded in 2003, the Homeless World Cup offers a unique platform for individuals who face homelessness to compete in street soccer. The event aims to challenge and combat societal prejudices against homeless individuals while fostering a sense of community and engagement through sport. Beyond the homeless, the tournament also welcomes refugees and others, providing a diverse playground for empowerment and interaction. With heightened visibility in the international media, including a recent Netflix adaptation, the tournament continues to gather momentum and support.

Japan’s Past Participation

Historically, Japan has participated in the Homeless World Cup three times—in 2004 in Gothenburg, 2009 in Milan, and 2011 in Paris. However, due to financial challenges and a shift towards domestic activities, Japan did not revive its participation until recently. After a significant hiatus, the Diversity Soccer Association stepped in to manage Japan's participation. The team made a triumphant return in 2024 for the Seoul tournament, buoyed by the support of LIFULL, which became the official sponsor. Feedback from participants indicates a transformative experience, highlighting statements like, “My perspective on life changed” and “I was able to connect with others across borders.”

A New Chapter for Japan

The upcoming 2025 tournament marks an exciting milestone for Japan, as it strives for consecutive participations for the first time in history. The return to the Homeless World Cup inspired many to express desires for involvement, with budding players wishing to take part in the event. Continued participation not only aims to answer the call for those facing challenges but to cultivate a ‘society without outsiders.’ It serves as a foundation for inclusivity and unity, connecting individuals through shared experiences and aspirations.

In preparation for this monumental event, the Diversity Soccer Association plans various initiatives, including practice sessions, webinars, and fundraising campaigns. The community is encouraged to participate and provide support, rallying around the shared vision of a more inclusive society.
