Experience the Allure of Noh Theatre at Shibuya Noh
As part of a unique cultural initiative, Cerulean Tower Noh Theatre in Shibuya will be hosting the upcoming performance series,
Shibuya Noh, starting from August 28, 2026, until March 26, 2027. Now entering its eighth year, this captivating series is designed to bring Noh theatre closer to the audience while supporting the next generation of Noh artists.
Noh, which boasts a rich history of over 650 years, transcends traditional boundaries to connect modern audiences with Japan's cultural heritage. Each performance will begin with an engaging explanation by Noh critic Naoki Kaneko, offering insights into the stories and highlights of the evening's Noh plays. Attendees will receive programs containing background information and texts to enhance their appreciation of the performances. Following each show, audiences will have the opportunity to meet the performers during an intimate after-talk session, making the Shibuya Noh experience truly memorable.
The Performances
The series includes four enthralling nights, each showcasing different traditional Noh plays, all chosen and presented by the Noh artists themselves.

Night One (August 28, 2026):
Play: Kamo
Style: Kan'ami School
Synopsis: A tale of a divine encounter at a riverside, where the protagonist learns about blessings from the deities of Kamo Shrine.
2. Night Two (January 22, 2027):
Play: Katsuragi
Style: Kongō School
Synopsis: A mountain priest's joyous encounter with a village maiden reveals the power of prayers and deities.

Night Three (February 26, 2027):
Play: Sumidagawa
Style: Kanze School
Synopsis: A mother’s desperate journey to find traces of her lost child unfolds at the Ueno River.
4. Final Night (March 26, 2027):
Highlight: Featuring performances from the five Noh styles culminating in a captivating closing talk.
Educational Opportunity
Attendees from the first three nights will also have the chance to participate in free pre-performance workshops led by the Noh artists themselves (reservation necessary).
