In a rapidly evolving educational landscape, the way schools communicate with families is transforming significantly. Finalsite, a leading K–12 Family Experience Platform that supports over 50,000 educational institutions globally, has unveiled its insightful 2027 District Communications Report. This comprehensive study reveals key developments in school communications and offers a look into the challenges still facing many districts today.
Central to the report's findings is the observation that districts are shifting their focus from merely disseminating information to achieving impactful results for both schools and families. The new approach is driven by a response to changing expectations from families, who seek more meaningful interactions and effective communication from their schools.
Key Findings From the Report
The report surfaces three critical findings that illustrate these changing priorities:
1.
Outcome-Based Measurement: There has been a notable increase in the number of districts tracking real-world outcomes associated with their communication strategies. Comparing the data to the 2025 report, the proportion of districts monitoring student and family retention rates has more than doubled. This is accompanied by a growth in conversion tracking from 17.7% to 24.5%. Such metrics suggest that schools are keen to understand the direct impact of their communications on enrollment, retention, and overall school performance.
2.
Accessibility Challenges: Despite the progress, families often face difficulties completing everyday tasks related to school. Over 67% of educators indicated that parents frequently require assistance with processes like forms, payments, and registrations. Furthermore, issues like fragmented systems and multiple login requirements emerge as significant barriers to engagement. With a substantial 70.4% of districts indicating they translate emergency alerts, it's concerning that only 21.4% consistently translate important payment-related announcements, deepening the communication gap.
3.
AI Integration and Policy Gaps: Artificial Intelligence (AI) adoption is on the rise, with almost 87% of communication teams now utilizing AI for various tasks including drafting emails and managing social media posts. However, only 21.7% of these teams have established formal guidelines governing AI use, despite widespread concerns regarding data accuracy and public trust in these technologies. The disparity between AI application and policy development highlights a critical area for school districts to address moving forward.
Insights from Finalsite’s CEO

He states, "It's the foundation for building trust with families, making it easier for them to engage with their schools, access information and take action. This research shows encouraging progress in how districts measure success, and it also shows there's still a long way to go to overcome the barriers that continue to create unnecessary work for families and staff."
