Celebrating 100 Years of Matsuya Ginza with a Unique Café
Matsuya Ginza, a name synonymous with quality and tradition in Tokyo, is proud to commemorate its 100th anniversary with a special event from September 26 to October 13. Taking place in the 8th-floor event square, the exhibition titled "Tsu-tsu-mu Exhibition: The Art of Design that Gently Connects the World" is complemented by the opening of a limited-time café,
Tsu-tsu-mu Café by OGAKI BOOKSTORE.
Experience the Café's Unique Offerings
The café is managed by
Ogaki Bookstore, a Kyoto-based establishment that merges experience with literature, art, and design. Visitors can immerse themselves in the exhibition atmosphere while enjoying a selection of beverages and delicacies. This unique space encourages a relaxed experience, allowing guests to sip tea while reading exhibition catalogs or browse a curated selection of design-related books.
A Thoughtfully Designed Environment
The café's interior has been thoughtfully curated by the renowned designer
Makoto Koizumi from the Japan Design Committee, reflecting the essence of the exhibition's theme, "Tsu-tsu-mu," which embodies the concept of wrapping or connecting. The space features exquisite furnishings such as chairs from
Maruni Woodwork, along with intricately designed glassware from
Sugawara Craft Glass and metals from
Nousaku. Patrons can even purchase some of these beautifully crafted items directly from the café.
About Designer Makoto Koizumi
Born in Tokyo in 1960, Koizumi learned under prominent designers before establishing Koizumi Studio in 1990. He opened the
Koizumi Tool Shop in 2003 to share design ideas and foster collaboration with craftspeople across Japan. His commitment to reviving traditional craftsmanship led to the formation of the
Waza Za organization in 2015, and his accolades include the
Mainichi Design Award and the
Japan Craft Exhibition Grand Prize in 2015.
Curated Reading Selections from Top Creators
To enhance the connection between design and literature, the café will host a special selection initiative entitled
'A Book That Influenced Me'. Members of the Japan Design Committee have each chosen a significant book that shaped their design philosophies, accompanied by personal comments. Visitors can explore these selections and purchase featured titles.
Example of Selected Books
- - Kengo Kuma - The European Fin-de-Siècle: This influential work provided invaluable insights into modern architecture, fundamentally shaping the understanding of contemporary design.

Delightful Menu Inspired by the Exhibition
The café will not only offer a visually and intellectually stimulating environment but also a palate-pleasing menu. Patrons can enjoy
