Celebrating Film Excellence: Mike Wicklein Receives Nora Roberts Foundation Award at Maryland International Film Festival



The Maryland International Film Festival-Hagerstown is set to honor renowned documentary filmmaker Mike Wicklein with the prestigious Nora Roberts Foundation Award during the festival’s 14th opening night on March 26, 2026. The event will take place at the Historic Maryland Theatre in Hagerstown and promises to be a glamorous evening filled with recognition and celebration of cinematic achievements.

Filmmaker Mike Wicklein, whose career spans over five decades, is widely respected for his impactful storytelling and exceptional dedication to documentary film. The award, presented annually, acknowledges his significant contributions to both the film industry and the arts community in Maryland, particularly highlighting his deep-rooted ties to the state.

Nicole Houser, President of the Film Festival Board of Directors, shared glowing praise for Wicklein, recognizing him as one of the hardest working documentary directors in the country. His work encapsulates a variety of themes, including important historical narratives such as the Civil War, as well as local stories that reflect the cultural fabric of Maryland.

Wicklein's journey in film began in his youth, immersed in the art of filmmaking and television production through the Washington County Board of Education. Drawing inspiration from the vivid stories depicted on screen in his hometown, he later brought his expertise back to Hagerstown, actively contributing to local arts and media development. In 1978, he managed the reopening of the Maryland Theatre, infusing diversity into its programming.

In 1979, Wicklein launched Video Vision, the first independent video production company in Western Maryland. His repertoire includes producing documentaries that feature the Maryland Symphony and significant local events. His works gained traction, considerably during the 125th commemoration of the Civil War. His production skills led him to collaborate with prominent figures in cinematic history, producing behind-the-scenes footage for Turner Pictures and HBO.

Wicklein’s extensive film career further developed in Baltimore, where he founded the Wicklein Group. His ability to seamlessly blend narrative styles with live event production opened doors to produce impactful projects for notable corporations.
