Swan Defence to Build Six Chemical Tankers for Rederiet Stenersen AS

Swan Defence and Heavy Industries Limited Secures Landmark Tanker Order

Swan Defence and Heavy Industries Limited (SDHI) has recently announced a significant milestone in the maritime industry, securing its first newbuild contract for the construction of six chemical tankers. This contract comes from the esteemed European shipping company, Rederiet Stenersen AS, and marks a major achievement for the Indian shipbuilding sector.

The contract, valued at an impressive $227 million, involves the construction of six IMO Type II chemical tankers, each with a deadweight tonnage (DWT) of 18,000. These tankers are set to be built at SDHI's revitalized shipyard located in Gujarat, India. The project is a testament to SDHI's capabilities in delivering complex commercial vessels with world-class standards. In addition to the initial six vessels, the agreement includes an option for six additional sister ships.

The first tanker from this contract is projected to be delivered within 33 months, with future deliveries planned at regular intervals. The vessels will be designed by Marinform AS and StoGda Ship Design Engineering and will be classified by DNV GL. Notably, these ships will adhere to the Ice Class 1A standards and will feature advanced hybrid propulsion technology that utilizes dual fuel, making them equipped for multiple operational modes with a high level of automation.

Vivek Merchant, director of SDHI, expressed his enthusiasm regarding this contract, stating, “This marks a historic milestone in the new pathway of our shipyard towards becoming a cutting-edge shipbuilding hub. The order from Rederiet Stenersen AS underscores the global trust in our capability to deliver high-quality, future-ready vessels. This agreement not only represents a significant accomplishment for SDHI but also offers a solid endorsement of the expanding commercial shipbuilding ecosystem in India.”

He further highlighted the positive impact of India’s progressive maritime policies, including the Financial Assistance for Shipbuilding Program, which have allowed Indian shipyards to compete successfully with top global counterparts. Merchant extended his gratitude to Rederiet Stenersen AS for their confidence in SDHI, emphasizing the importance of this partnership.

This contract is particularly noteworthy as it represents the first new construction order received by the largest shipyard in India since its revitalization under the management of Swan Corp Limited, SDHI’s parent company. John Stenersen, the Vessel Management Director of Rederiet Stenersen AS, reiterated the importance of this venture, saying, “This is our first construction contract with an Indian shipyard after extensive technical and commercial evaluations. Our decision reflects strong confidence in the infrastructure and engineering capabilities of SDHI and their commitment to delivering specialized vessels that meet Stenersen’s global standards while maintaining competitive pricing.”
