Groupement Mousquetaires Unveils AI-Driven Solutions to Combat Retail Shrinkage

Tackling Retail Shrinkage with AI

In an impressive move to combat shrinkage in the retail sector, Groupement Mousquetaires, a prominent French retail group, is set to implement an AI-powered solution designed specifically to reduce fraudulent activities at self-service checkouts (SCOs). Known for its brands such as Intermarché and Netto, the organization is taking significant steps to enhance operational efficiency and improve customer service.

This initiative follows a successful pilot program conducted at an Intermarché store in La Farlède, where the Vynamic® Smart Vision I Shrink Reduction technology from Diebold Nixdorf was trialed. The results were remarkable—erroneous transactions plummeted from 3% to less than 1%, showcasing the effectiveness of AI in identifying and addressing anomalies during checkout operations.

The technology works by analyzing real-time customer interactions, detecting items that pass without being scanned, those stacked on top of each other, or customers who leave the checkout area without completing their transactions. When an error occurs, customers receive immediate on-screen alerts, and store personnel are notified on their mobile devices, allowing for prompt resolution of any issues.

Maxime Canu from the Inno Lab at Groupement Mousquetaires expressed enthusiasm about the project, noting that the introduction of this AI solution is a transformative innovation for the management of self-service checkouts. It not only aids in minimizing losses but also makes the transaction process more fluid and seamless for consumers. This dual benefit highlights a significant turning point in the retail landscape.

Since the inception of this technology in March 2024, the advantages gained have been substantial. Apart from the drastic reduction in erroneous transactions, the need for cashier interventions has decreased by nearly 15%. This improvement has resulted in shorter wait times for customers and an overall optimized shopping experience, freeing staff to focus on more complex tasks that require human interaction.

Laurent Hugou, the owner of the Intermarché store participating in the pilot, acknowledged the distinctive benefits brought about by this AI-enhanced solution. He noted a notable decrease in errors, which has not only lightened the workload for his team but also enhanced customer interactions, making them calmer and more efficient. The technology has quickly become essential to their daily operations after just six months.

Matt Redwood, Vice President of Retail Technology Solutions at Diebold Nixdorf, shared the company’s satisfaction with the pilot's outcomes and optimism for the broader rollout. He mentioned that their integrated solution of hardware, software, and service is crafted with retailers in mind, ensuring it supports store staff while enhancing customer experiences.

Future Outlook

Groupement Mousquetaires exemplifies the growing application of AI technology in retail, aiming to mitigate shrinkage while simultaneously elevating customer satisfaction.
