The 60th Katsushika Summer Fireworks Festival: A Celebration of Creativity
This year marks the
60th Katsushika Summer Fireworks Festival, scheduled for
July 28th. To celebrate this milestone, the district is introducing a special program that encourages elementary school children to engage actively in the world of fireworks beyond mere viewing. Children will learn about the intricacies of fireworks and get the opportunity to design their own, which will then light up the Katsushika night sky on the festival day!

A. Professional Fireworks Class
A professional fireworks instructor from Ikebun, one of the most reputable fireworks production companies in Japan, will conduct a special class at the
Katsushika Shitamachi Torasan Memorial Hall. Participants will receive a model fireworks kit as a souvenir!
In this session, the fireworks master will explain fascinating concepts such as:
- - What is the size of fireworks?
- - How do they launch into the sky?
- - How are those vibrant colors created?
The goal of this engaging class is to cultivate excitement and interest towards fireworks among children while fostering a sense of community pride in preparation for the grand 60th anniversary festival.
B. Create Your Own Fireworks Workshop
In this innovative workshop, children will express their creativity by designing their ideal fireworks on a canvas (fireworks parchment). They can combine elements such as the
4-inch ball,
mains,
comets, and various other sizes like
2.5-inch and 2-inch balls to create their unique fireworks.
Each child will have the chance to creatively title their work. After all designs are collected, a panel of fireworks artists will select six designs to be produced and launched during the festival!
