Synopsis of the Play
In the northeast of Kyushu lies a small village nestled between the sea and mountains - Sarugami Village. This picturesque location boasts a fishing port and blooming mandarin orchards, yet faces turmoil due to issues regarding land redevelopment for a highway construction project.
In the fall of 2015, Miwa returns to the village to attend the thirteenth memorial service for her mother, accompanied by her eldest daughter, Takumi. The community is divided: some have accepted the government's offer and chosen to leave the village while others still waver, and some staunchly refuse to move. With the population declining leading to the closure of local schools, there are concerns about preserving the traditional Kagura dance. Amidst this, connections begin to form among those who share no blood ties or local roots, fostering a desire to cherish their memories and relationships in this beloved land. Miwa and Takumi witness how individuals with differing perspectives navigate their coexistence despite their differences, ultimately sparking change in their own lives.
