Artistic Journey
The roots of Uii’s fascination with the Ainu people can be traced back to her childhood. Inspired by a school project that showcased the story of an Ainu girl, Uii's interest burgeoned into something deeper following her first visit to the Ainu community in Nibutani, Hokkaido, in 1992. This pivotal encounter ignited her passion for sharing the stories and realities of the Ainu through her lens. Over the years, Uii has dismantled preconceived notions of the Ainu people and has instead documented the essential truths of nature and humanity through her compelling photography.
The term 'ankoraci' conveys a sense of being present, reflected in Uii's approach to her subjects. Through her work, she captures a delicate yet powerful bond with her subjects, inviting viewers into a space that feels both intimate and profound. Her exhibition includes around 100 selected works from her expansive collection, narrating her journey and evolution alongside the Ainu community.
Message from the Artist
In Uii's words, 'ankoraci' encapsulates the beauty of being present in the moment. ‘I wish to preserve this moment in memory,’ she reflects. With each click of her shutter, she emphasizes the fleeting nature of time, inviting her audience to reflect on the relationship between the present and the past.
Notable Works and Achievements
Born in Chiba Prefecture in 1960, Uii is a graduate of Musashino Art University and has been actively engaging with Ainu culture since her initial visit in 1992.
