Toyota Mobility Foundation Launches Inclusive Transport Initiative in Medellín

Enhancing Mobility in Medellín: A New Initiative by Toyota Mobility Foundation

The Toyota Mobility Foundation (TMF), under the leadership of Akio Toyoda, has officially launched a collaborative initiative with Medellín, Colombia, aimed at improving public transportation accessibility for its citizens through the program named 'Medellín Mobility for All.' This initiative is designed to address the movement challenges faced by many residents, particularly those with physical disabilities, ensuring they can travel independently and securely within the city.

In collaboration with Ruta N, Medellín's public agency dedicated to fostering innovation and technology, TMF received applications from various entities across six countries, including Chile, Brazil, the USA, Greece, Spain, and Colombia itself. Out of 20 submissions, five organizations were selected to participate in the pilot program, demonstrating innovative solutions to enhance mobility in the city.

Addressing Local Mobility Challenges

Medellín presents unique mobility challenges, with over 55% of its streets comprised of steep hills, particularly affecting districts like Manrique and Aranjuez, where many residents face physical limitations. To tackle these challenges, the program focuses on three main areas:

1. Improving Safety for Pedestrians and Users of Mobility Aids.
2. Enhancing Barrier-Free Access to Public Transport.
3. Creating Quick and Safe Environments for Boarding and Alighting Buses.

These focus areas aim to foster inclusivity in transportation, ensuring that all citizens can participate fully in urban mobility.

Selected Organizations and Their Proposals

The five selected entities include innovative companies and organizations that will work closely with local residents to develop and implement sustainable mobility solutions by March 2027. TMF has allocated a total grant of 1 billion Colombian Pesos (approximately $400,000) for this endeavor, with half of this amount designated for the pilot phases of the initiatives. Here’s a brief overview of their proposals:

1. Brazo Amigo SAS

This manufacturer of electric assist devices for manual wheelchairs aims to alleviate the burden of mobility in hilly urban environments by developing an electric propulsion device that can be attached to standard wheelchairs. This innovation is expected to greatly support users in navigating the challenging terrain of Medellín.

2. Solyon Technologies

An AI-driven technology firm, Solyon intends to create a conversational digital assistant designed for users with disabilities. This AI assistant will provide real-time navigation information, enabling users to make informed decisions while traveling and reducing anxiety associated with unexpected issues during transit.

3. Universidad EAFIT

This local university will leverage public data to develop a user-friendly route planning application aimed at individuals with disabilities. The app will help users identify dangerous locations, thus allowing them to create safer travel plans.

4. El Comité Fundación

This non-profit organization is focused on improving the physical environments of bus stops and boarding areas. Their proposal includes installing ramps and enhancing access points to foster a more comfortable and accessible public transport experience for all passengers, including those who use wheelchairs.

5. Fundación Más Urbano

A non-profit organization dedicated to urban improvement and design, Fundación Más Urbano will implement cost-effective urban enhancements through tactical urbanism. This initiative includes removing curbs and improving signage based on public feedback to create continuous, responsive urban improvements.

A Commitment to Global Mobility Solutions

Since its inception, Toyota has been dedicated to creating a richer society through its services, respecting its stakeholders—including customers, partners, employees, and communities alike. The establishment of TMF in August 2014 signified Toyota's commitment to broader social contributions, focusing on addressing mobility challenges worldwide. By executing various projects aimed at fostering inclusive and sustainable urban environments, TMF is working towards a vision of improved mobility for all.

Through the 'Medellín Mobility for All' initiative, the Toyota Mobility Foundation endeavors to make a significant impact, ensuring that all citizens, regardless of their physical abilities, can navigate their city with confidence and ease.
