Sakai Cultural Experience: Traditional Takumi Taiko Festoons in Osaka

Experience Sakai's Cultural Heritage with the Takumi Taiko

On June 14, 2026, the Agora Regency Sakai Hotel is set to host a captivating ceremony to unveil the traditional Takumi Taiko, an impressive cultural symbol of Sakai. This event aims to promote and engage visitors with the rich local heritage, showcasing the craftsmanship of this unique festival drum, which rises to about 4 meters in height and weighs roughly 2 tons.

In partnership with the Sakai Takumi Taiko Association, this exhibition will run from June 7 to August 22, 2026, in the hotel’s expansive first-floor lobby. The inaugural ceremony on June 14 will feature a demonstration involving around 60 participants who will lift the drum and perform traditional songs, offering attendees a rare chance to experience the festive culture up close.

About the Takumi Taiko

The Takumi Taiko, originally created for the Sugawara Shrine's Hassaku Festival, dates back to 1909. It survived the extensive destruction of World War II and, after a hiatus in ceremonies, was revived by local artisans in 2002. The drum not only serves as a festival artifact but also exemplifies the intricate craftsmanship and artistic traditions of the Sakai community. The rich golden embroidery adorning the drum reflects the local culture's artistry, making it an object of both festivities and craft heritage.

The display promises to be a highlight of the “Sakai Cultural Experience,” an initiative by the Agora Hotel Alliance to broadcast the cultural and traditional allure of Sakai to both domestic and international audiences. Previously, the events included workshops and seasonal displays, allowing guests to engage with the local culture beyond mere observation.
