Yoyogi High School Launches Outreach Support Course for Homebound Students

New Outreach Support Course Launched by Yoyogi High School

In a significant move toward inclusive education, Yoyogi High School, based in Shima, Mie Prefecture, has announced the opening of its new Outreach Support Course. This initiative, in collaboration with its support school Yoyogi Gakuin and Gakken Holdings, aims to provide tailored educational assistance to high school students who are unable to attend classes due to various circumstances.

During its development, Yoyogi High School has consistently prioritized the unique needs of its diverse student body. Founded with a vision inspired by the educational philosophy depicted in the book Tokka-chan by the Window, the school has evolved from its roots as an alternative school into a fully recognized educational institution, implementing a proactive approach to support students facing challenges like school refusal.

Over the years, Yoyogi High School has witnessed many former students who, having struggled with school refusal, found themselves in prolonged isolation well into their adult lives. This experience prompted the establishment of the Outreach Support Course, designed to offer assistance to those currently facing similar struggles, encouraging them to reconnect with educational opportunities.

What is the Outreach Support Course?

The Outreach Support Course involves direct visits to students’ homes by qualified educators and specialized support staff to establish a trusting relationship through dialogue with both students and their parents. The program offers a variety of tailored support services, including communication, academic guidance, and assistance with leaving the house, all customized to individual student circumstances.

As students show improvements and begin to regain their academic abilities, they have the option to transition back to traditional classroom settings, facilitating their reintegration into normal school life.

Course Management and Collaboration

This initiative is executed in partnership with Gakken L Staffing, a subsidiary of Gakken Holdings, known for its extensive experience in providing support to students with school refusal and developmental disorders. Gakken L Staffing also operates Gakken WILL Academy, a free school and correspondence-based support institution dedicated to these students. The teaching staff at Gakken L Staffing includes trained professionals who are well-versed in educational, psychological, and child welfare fields, as well as instructors who have experienced school refusal themselves and have successfully re-entered the educational environment. With this expert backing, the Outreach Support Course aims to offer meticulous assistance, boasting impressive success rates where 97.3% of students either returned to school or moved to their desired schools or careers.

A Vision for the Future

Through the Outreach Course, Yoyogi High School strives to support students who have found it challenging to take their first steps back into learning and society. Parents dealing with their children's school refusal or isolation are encouraged to reach out for consultation.
