Elvira Dyangani Ose Takes the Helm for Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial

In an exciting development for the art community, the Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi has appointed Elvira Dyangani Ose as the Artistic Director for the second edition of the Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial. This eagerly anticipated event is scheduled to open in the autumn of 2026 and will continue into 2027. Building upon the success of the inaugural biennial, which debuted in 2024, Ose's appointment brings a wealth of experience and an innovative vision for public art in the emirate.

The first edition of the Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial ran from November 15, 2024, to April 30, 2025, showcasing site-specific installations from both local and international artists. Notably, several works from this exhibition were acquired to become permanent fixtures throughout Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, including impressive contributions from artists like Kader Attia and Superflex.

Elvira Dyangani Ose is currently the Director of the Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA) and has previously held the position of Director and Chief Curator at The Showroom in London. Her extensive resume includes impressive roles, such as Curator at the eighth Gothenburg International Biennial for Contemporary Art, Senior Curator at Creative Time, and Curatorial roles at Tate Modern among others. Her endeavors within these institutions highlight Ose's ability to navigate and reshape the narratives surrounding contemporary art.

At the heart of Dyangani Ose's curatorial philosophy lies a dedication to exploring the interplay between history, public space, and the representation of collective experiences. Her projects often engage with non-Western narratives, making her an apt selection to further elevate the discussions around public art in Abu Dhabi. Recent notable projects include collaborative exhibitions like "Project a Black Planet" and other impactful initiatives focusing on culture and identity.

Ose's academic background is as impressive as her professional journey. She holds a degree in Art History from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and is pursuing a PhD in Visual Studies at Cornell University, where she also obtained her Master's degree. In addition to her scholarship, she has contributed to academic discourse by teaching at Goldsmiths College, imparting knowledge on subjects including Museology, Curating, and Contemporary African Art.

As Abu Dhabi prepares for its next biennial celebration of public art, expectations are high for the transformative impact that Elvira Dyangani Ose will bring. Her vision for the biennial is likely to further cement Abu Dhabi's status as a vibrant cultural hub, fostering community engagement and reflecting the emirate's rich cultural tapestry.

Further details about the biennial, including key dates and featured artists, will be announced as planning progresses. This event promises to once again illuminate Abu Dhabi as an area characterized by creativity, collaboration, and public expression of art.
