Boston Children's Museum Bids Farewell to Iconic Construction Zone Exhibit for New Dream it! Build it! Experience

Boston Children's Museum Says Goodbye to Construction Zone

The Boston Children's Museum, a pivotal space for interactive learning, announced the closing of its iconic Construction Zone exhibit. This exhibit will close its doors on Sunday, February 22, making way for an exciting new experience dubbed Dream it! Build it! set to open in late spring 2026.

A Lasting Legacy of the Construction Zone

The Construction Zone has been a cornerstone for educational play since it first opened, accompanying the city's Big Dig project. Designed as Boston's inaugural child-focused construction area, the exhibit spanned over 3,750 square feet, filled with real construction equipment and interactive elements that allowed children to truly immerse themselves in the world of building and urban development.

Carole Charnow, the President and CEO of the museum, expressed her sentiments about the upcoming transition, saying, "For over two decades, the Construction Zone has delighted millions of families, allowing them to play with trucks, pulleys, and more. However, as the construction field continues to grow, it is essential that we evolve to reflect the latest trends in STEM education and modern city development."

Embracing New Opportunities with Dream it! Build it!

The Dream it! Build it! exhibit is designed not just as a replacement, but as an evolution, focusing on the creative and community aspects of construction. It aims to foster concepts such as problem-solving, collaboration, and resilience—skills that integrate with future career paths in STEM fields.

The engaging features of the new exhibit will include a variety of hands-on activities:
  • - The Big Build Climb – Children can collaborate to construct large-scale projects using scaffolding and construction materials.
  • - Dream City – A digital space where families can imagine and sketch their ideas, contributing to a communal urban design.
  • - Design Studio – Participants will explore the use of light, color, and various materials in designing personal and community spaces.
  • - Green Spaces – This area emphasizes sustainable design principles, showing kids how to responsibly integrate nature into urban environments.
  • - Portraits of Workers – Visitors will meet real construction professionals, highlighting the diverse backgrounds and paths within the industry.

The shift from Construction Zone to Dream it! Build it! marks an exciting chapter for the Boston Children's Museum, maintaining its mission of fostering learning and curiosity among children while adapting to the changing landscape of education.

As Charnow mentions, "The new exhibit brings excitement and innovation, tailored to inspire our next generation. Kids will love the multitude of activities designed for dreaming, creating, and building together."

The Boston Children's Museum remains committed to its core mission: to engage children and families through joyful discovery experiences that instill a lasting appreciation for learning and creativity.
