Exploring Artistic Transformation at Tuwaiq Sculpture 2026 Exhibition in Riyadh
The Tuwaiq Sculpture 2026 exhibition, hosted by the Royal Commission for Riyadh City through the Riyadh Art Program, celebrates its seventh anniversary, presenting innovative artworks from around the globe. Taking place from February 9 to 22, 2026, on Prince Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Street (Al Tahlia) in Riyadh, this exhibition offers a unique opportunity for the public to engage with art, free of charge.
This year's theme, "Traces of What Will Be," delves deep into the concept of transformation as influenced by the ongoing evolution of Riyadh. Historically significant, the exhibition site was previously home to Riyadh's initial desalination plants, connecting present artistic expressions with the city’s legacy of innovation and improvement in quality of life. The site thus becomes a fitting context for the featured works, which highlight artistic responses to environmental changes and urban development.
The exhibition showcases 25 large sculptures, created during a live sculpting phase that ran from January 10 to February 5, 2026. During this phase, artists utilized local stones and reclaimed metals, turning raw materials into finished artworks. This process-oriented focus emphasizes sustainability, material intelligence, and the stories behind public art.
The symposium has attracted not just local but also international artists from 18 different countries. Selected from over 650 entries submitted by artists from 50 different nations, their works echo various interpretations of the theme, exploring ideas of memory, responsible resource use, environmental innovation, and humanity’s impact on both natural and urban landscapes. The curatorial framework, overseen by Lulwa Alhomoud, Sarah Staton, and Rut Blees Luxemburg, leverages the combined expertise of its members to craft artworks that engage intimately with local materials, their sites, and the future of urban art.
In addition to the visual feast, the exhibition offers an interactive program featuring workshops, panel discussions, and educational tours. This initiative aims to foster community engagement, making the Tuwaiq Sculpture Symposium a vibrant cultural platform that promotes contemporary art awareness.
The artworks produced during this edition of Tuwaiq Sculpture will be permanently added to Riyadh's growing art collection and displayed in significant public spaces throughout the city. This commitment not only extends the impact of the exhibition but also integrates contemporary sculpture into the urban fabric of Riyadh.
Since its inception in 2019, the Tuwaiq Sculpture Symposium has brought together over 170 artists locally and internationally, continuously adding new pieces to the permanent collection of Riyadh Art. To date, over 60 sculptures from prior editions have been installed across the city, with plans for more in future phases. This ongoing dedication reflects a long-term strategy for enhancing public art in Riyadh.
