Sustainability Made Accessible
In a groundbreaking move to promote sustainability, Bookoff Corporation, a subsidiary of Bookoff Group Holdings based in Kanagawa, has partnered with Nakajima Corporation. They are renowned for their delightful character, "Kae-ru no Pikurusu" (Pickles the Frog). This collaboration breathes new life into discarded CDs and DVDs, recycling these materials into practical and charming items. From May 30 to June 15, 2025, the two companies will showcase their innovative products at a pop-up event in Tokyo Solamachi.
The initiative aims to raise awareness about recycling and encourage a circular economy mindset. Bookoff collects approximately 24 million CDs and DVDs annually, with about 1,700 tons deemed unsaleable and destined for disposal. Recognizing the potential of these materials, they developed a method to recycle and create "CD plastics," or CD-Pura. These recycled goods not only contribute to waste reduction but also promote a sustainable lifestyle.
Recycled Goods with a Touch of Charm
The collaboration will feature five unique products that incorporate the beloved Pickles character alongside Bookoff’s original character, "Yomu Yomu-kun." Products include smartphone stands, acrylic keychains, crystal magnets, block calendars, and record coasters. Among these, the smartphone stand, block calendar, and record coaster are crafted entirely from 100% recycled polystyrene, demonstrating a significant decrease in CO₂ emissions, boasting an impressive 92.7% reduction compared to virgin materials.
This partnership embodies the essence of creativity and sustainability, giving consumers an opportunity to engage in eco-friendly practices while enjoying quirky, character-themed items. Aiming for greater community engagement, the collaboration intends to deliver further insights into the recycling process and the benefits of sustainability.
Event Details
The pop-up event will run from May 30 to June 15, showcasing these exciting new products aimed at inspiring a rethink on waste. Following the Tokyo event, Bookoff plans to sell these collaboration items at their Bookoff Super Bazaar 409 in Kawasaki from June 26 to August 31. Attendees can also enjoy a story-art depiction of the meeting between Yomu Yomu-kun and Pickles, emphasizing the transformation of waste into viable goods.
The initiative aligns with Japan’s recognized Reuse Day, observed on August 8, which encourages public awareness regarding the importance of reusing items to cultivate a sustainable future. Reinforcing their commitment, Bookoff actively engages in various services designed to promote reuse and recycling, demonstrating how individuals can contribute to a circular economy.
