Tokyo Sports GOMI Championship 2025 Highlights
The Tokyo Sports GOMI Championship on November 1, 2025, brought together 16 teams of high school students, showcasing their skills in cleaning up trash while competing for points. Each team, consisting of three members aged between 15 and 18, faced the challenge of collecting as much trash as possible within a designated area and time limit.
Organized by the Nippon Foundation Sports GOMI Federation, this event aimed to raise awareness about the critical issue of marine debris. Approximately 80% of ocean waste originates from land, and events like this empower youth to take action. Total Trash Collected
Overall, the event saw a collective effort of 63.3 kg of litter collected from the Kagurazaka and Iidabashi area, known for its historic streets filled with restaurants and bars. Participants faced the challenges of steep hills while diligently picking up litter. Despite the physically demanding environment, these high schoolers worked tirelessly to gather a significant amount of debris, showing incredibly dedication.
Comments from the Winning Team
A member of the 'Gomunity' team remarked, “As we walked through the izakaya street from Iidabashi to Kagurazaka, we found numerous plastic bottles. There were so many illegally dumped items that we couldn't pick them all up, but that is what helped us win. We also encountered heavy cardboard along the river. They had soaked up water from the previous day's rain, making them extremely heavy, yet we managed to carry them all with teamwork. We’ll give our best at the national tournament!”
