Huawei's DigiSchool Project: A Step Toward Educational Transformation in Morocco
Huawei, in collaboration with the Moroccan government, has recently concluded the DigiSchool 2024 initiative, emphasizing its commitment to ensuring equitable access to digital technologies for students across the Kingdom. This program was launched in February 2024 and plays a pivotal role in aligning with Morocco's educational reform plan set for 2022-2026. Its successful completion marks a notable milestone in a public-private partnership aimed at enhancing digital literacy among the nation's youth.
According to David Li, CEO of Huawei Morocco, "The DigiSchool initiative underscores the importance of bolstering digital skills and reinforcing public-private partnerships to enhance a resilient digital ecosystem." This partnership is not merely strategic; it embodies a commitment to invest in training and innovation, supporting Morocco's vision of providing quality and inclusive digital education.
The DigiSchool program has been specifically designed to cultivate essential digital skills among students and teachers, offering training in various technologies, including artificial intelligence, virtual reality, web development, and app creation. Throughout the year, participants gained hands-on experience in robotics and coding while engaging in problem-solving activities and enhancing their digital literacy through interactive games that foster creativity and initiative.
Structured in four distinct phases, DigiSchool 2024 commenced with the training of 265 secondary school teachers in information and communications technology (ICT) across 12 regions of Morocco. The second phase focused on continuous support for these trained educators, who subsequently applied their training to instruct approximately 2,650 students.
The third phase, running from May to November, saw the organization of 12 regional hackathons, engaging 714 students across the regions. The participants were tasked with developing ICT solutions to address predefined challenges. The final phase took place in December with technology boot camps in Fes, Marrakech, and Agadir. Collaborating with relevant regional educational academies, 180 students and 60 teachers from 12 regions participated in these boot camps, designed to refine the ICT skills acquired during their classes and at the hackathons earlier in the year.
Teams received personalized support to enhance their hackathon projects and present their solutions to a panel of judges, with outstanding contributions rewarded. The DigiSchool 2024 concluded with an evaluation tour of the boot camps in Agadir, attended by prominent figures such as Mohamed Saad Berrada, the Minister of National Education, Preschool, and Sports, as well as other educational leaders.
During this concluding event, students showcased their newly acquired skills by presenting their solutions to the delegation, illustrating the program's success and its alignment with Morocco's commitment to national digitalization of education, inclusion, and equality. This effort also solidifies the country's position as a regional exemplar of using technology as a vehicle for equality and progress.
Huawei's involvement in various educational initiatives worldwide, alongside its partners such as UNESCO and national ministries, is part of a broader global commitment to making digital education accessible. Through similar DigiSchool projects in Kenya, Senegal, South Africa, Chile, and China, Huawei aims to connect remote schools to the internet and enhance digital skills among both students and teachers.
