Reviving a Thousand-Year Tradition

Hokkien is recognized as one of the 60 major world languages by the United Nations, originating in southern China. Its speakers are intertwined with the maritime history, characterized by exploration and migration, which sets them apart from other cultural groups in the country. The concert not only celebrated this linguistic heritage but also sought to combat the generational decline in Hokkien speakers, particularly among the youth. The presence of thousands of Hokkien speakers in Huizhou underscored the urgency of revitalizing the mother tongue and its rich culture.

From Boston to Huizhou: A Global Journey

This ambitious event was spearheaded by Hokkien Music & Culture, an organization founded by Jiayu (Kitty) Huang, who was motivated by her childhood experiences in Huizhou. While raised in a family emphasizing the importance of the Hokkien language, she pursued music studies in Massachusetts and gained recognition early in her career, ultimately devising a platform that would allow her to promote Hokkien music on a global stage through Hokkien Music & Culture. Since its inception in 2023 in Los Angeles, the organization has combined several initiatives to foster Hokkien culture, including songwriting competitions and a worldwide concert tour.

Three Generations of Musical Heritage

The concert was a breathtaking amalgamation of talents across multiple generations, threaded together by the common thread of Hokkien culture. Scholars, veteran artists, and young talents shared the stage, further emphasizing the collective endeavor to celebrate and preserve Hokkien traditions. Performances featured traditional Hokkien songs alongside new compositions from the Global Hokkien Songwriting Competition.
