Kinokuniya Acquires All Shares of Keio Shoseki for Complete Subsidiary Status

Kinokuniya Expands Its Book Retail Empire

In a significant move within the Japanese publishing and retail industry, Kinokuniya Co., Ltd., headquartered in Shinjuku, Tokyo, has acquired all shares of Keio Shoseki Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Keio Corporation. This acquisition transforms Keio Shoseki into a fully owned subsidiary of Kinokuniya, effective from June 30, 2025.

This strategic acquisition not only enhances Kinokuniya's portfolio but also represents a significant shift in the operational framework of Keio Shoseki, which has a rich history dating back half a century. Originally known as Keibundo Bookstore, Keio Shoseki has established a solid presence with multiple stores along the Keio Line, becoming a trusted name for readers in the region.

Starting from the official transition date, Keio Shoseki will implement a new management structure. Akiyuki Nishimae, a senior advisor at Kinokuniya, will take on the role of President. Other key appointments include Daichi Masatani as a director, and part-time directors such as Katsuyuki Fujino (CEO of Kinokuniya), Shigeharu Ono (Vice President), and Shinichi Katsuragi (with an executive title). Notably, Masashi Takai, the Chairman of Kinokuniya, will serve as an advisor throughout this transition.

The integration of Keio Shoseki into the Kinokuniya family is aimed at leveraging the resources and service foundations of Kinokuniya to bring new value to customers. By doing so, they intend to create new opportunities for encounters with high-quality works and contribute to the cultural development of the local community.

As part of the rebranding initiative, the company will officially change its name to "Kinokuniya Shoseki Co., Ltd." following renovations of its stores, which will also be rebranded to reflect the Kinokuniya name gradually.
