Adelance's Studio AD Collaborates on the Musical Lady Beth with Innovative Wig Designs
Adelance Co., Ltd., based in Shinagawa, Tokyo, is a global leader in wellness, focusing on hair, beauty, and health. Their cultural arts division, Studio AD, is set to collaborate in an exciting project: the upcoming musical ‘Lady Beth,’ presented by Toho. This production will run from February 9 to March 27 at the Nissei Theatre in Chiyoda, Tokyo, and Studio AD will provide a range of wigs and hair styling services to enrich the performance.
Studio AD specializes in creating entertainment wigs that prioritize not just appearance, but the essence of the characters being portrayed. Designers meticulously consider character backgrounds and roles when crafting these wigs, ensuring they reflect the intended visual style while maintaining comfort for the performers. The wigs feature breathable materials and custom-fit designs to accommodate various head sizes, ensuring that each actor can perform without discomfort.
This collaboration will see notable talents from the entertainment world donning these custom wigs. Actors such as Iroha Okuda from Nogizaka46, Mayuko Konami, Shutaro Arisawa as Robin Blake, and Akito Tejima will all wear pieces crafted by Studio AD throughout the show’s run. A total of 53 wigs, along with numerous custom-made hairpieces and beards, will be integrated into the performances, with Studio AD also managing hair and makeup.
The mastermind behind the hair and makeup planning for ‘Lady Beth’ is Katsuyuki Tomioka, a seasoned professional who joined Adelance in 2003 after gaining experience in salon work. Tomioka has an impressive resume, having worked on multiple acclaimed productions including ‘Elisabeth,’ ‘1789,’ ‘Newsies,’ ‘Mozart!’, and ‘Great Gatsby,’ showcasing his versatility across both musicals and straight plays.
This musical is a grand historical romance that audaciously explores the life of Queen Elizabeth I, who brought prosperity to England over a span of approximately 45 years. The production is the result of a collaboration between the eminent creators Michael Kunze and Sylvester Levay, known for classics like ‘Elisabeth’ and ‘Mozart!’, alongside renowned Japanese director Shūichirō Koike, who will return to the stage after a successful initial premiere at the Imperial Theatre in 2014 and a revival in 2017. Following its performance in Switzerland in 2022, the musical is poised to return to Japan in 2026 with new enhancements to the original production.
