Culinary Institute of America Expands Leadership Team With Key Appointments
The Culinary Institute of America (CIA) has announced the expansion of its leadership team with the appointment of two new members. On July 16, 2026, the institution revealed that Christopher Aquilino would take on the role of Vice President for Workforce Development and Industry Solutions, while Michael Lederman joins as Chief Digital and Technology Officer.
Christopher Aquilino, who boasts an impressive 35 years of experience in culinary operations and workforce development, is anticipated to bring significant expertise to the role. His previous leadership positions include serving as the Chief Culinary Officer for Elior North America, where he developed training initiatives that enhanced organizational effectiveness. His commitment to improving employee engagement and mental health in the hospitality industry is noteworthy; he currently acts as one of six U.S. chef ambassadors for the Burnt Chef Project, a global initiative aimed at promoting mental wellness within the sector.
On the other hand, Michael Lederman carries 25 years of experience across several industries, including luxury hospitality and education. Before joining the CIA, he worked for nine years as the Chief Information Officer at The Leading Hotels of the World, a network of over 450 independent luxury hotels. His strategic initiatives there included a comprehensive modernization of technology and data practices, resulting in doubled revenue performance for member hotels during his tenure.
CIA President Michiel Bakker articulated the ambitious vision for the CIA's future: “As the CIA enters its next era, our ambition is clear: to become the world's leading global institution for comprehensive education across the culinary, food, beverage, and hospitality sectors.” To realize this vision, the CIA aims to expand its capabilities and elevate the experiences of its students and partners.
Bakker has expressed excitement about the capabilities that Aquilino and Lederman bring to the team. Their combined expertise is likely to enhance the educational offerings of the CIA, currently celebrating its 80th anniversary. The institution offers an extensive catalog of programs, including associate degrees, bachelor’s degrees, and master’s degrees in various culinary disciplines, as well as executive education and professional development.
The CIA, founded in 1946, has consistently focused on training future leaders in the food and hospitality industries, engaging a vibrant community of nearly 60,000 alumni worldwide, who drive innovation in various culinary fields. With new leadership in place, the CIA aims to further its commitment to community engagement, seamless student experiences, and sustainable practices in dining and hospitality.
With both appointments based on the CIA's New York campus, the team is poised to facilitate a renewed focus on creativity, operational leadership, and collaboration that will benefit learners at every stage of their careers. This strategic move signals the CIA’s commitment to nurture a robust learning environment, ensuring that it remains at the forefront of culinary education and workforce development.
In a rapidly evolving industry defined by technological advancements and changing consumer preferences, these appointments could be pivotal in shaping the future direction of the Culinary Institute of America. As the institution looks ahead, it remains dedicated to addressing industry needs and providing exceptional education that fosters lasting careers in culinary arts and hospitality.
