Beko Advocates for a Strong Industrial Policy Aligned with Climate Goals in Europe
Beko Pushes for a Forward-Thinking Industrial Policy
In the context of Europe's shift towards a new industrial era, Beko, recognized as the largest home appliance producer on the continent, is advocating for a robust and cohesive industrial strategy. This push was prominently highlighted during a recent key event centered around the Clean Industrial Deal. As a major signatory to the Antwerp declaration in the home appliance sector, Beko is committed not only to enhancing manufacturing strength and competitiveness but also to championing sustainability initiatives.
At the forefront of discussions, Beko's CEO, Hakan Bulgurlu, underscored the urgency of ensuring that industries investing in decarbonization and energy efficiency retain their competitive edge in a global market. He expressed that a bold investment-driven industrial strategy is necessary for Europe's future industrial landscape. According to him, the Clean Industrial Deal represents a pivotal moment for European industry, with the potential to position Europe as a leader in green and competitive industries. However, he emphasized that it should not compromise the continent's manufacturing base.
Bulgurlu remarked, "It is crucial for the European Commission to seize this opportunity to reevaluate Europe’s industrial manufacturing landscape and recognize the essential role the home appliance sector plays in meeting climate and industrial ambitions. The appliance industry is not just a significant employer; it is also a major innovator and a key contributor to the resilience of supply chains. Products designed for energy efficiency are fundamental to reducing emissions, slashing energy bills, and facilitating the transition to clean energy. For us to accelerate our journey towards climate neutrality, the EU must bolster its support for the industry through investment incentives and maintain a level playing field in international trade."
Beko is thoroughly aware of its pivotal role in advancing decarbonization efforts. The company prioritizes energy efficiency, often considered the “first fuel” in the clean energy transition, making it a top focus for their operations. Currently, energy-efficient appliances account for over 70% of Beko’s production units and constitute the majority of its revenue.
Bulgurlu continued, "There is often a perception that companies must choose between profits and responsibility. However, Beko exemplifies that a balanced approach can be both good for business and the environment. We have already established leadership in sustainable innovation, with our products conserving energy and reducing waste while aligning with the Green Pact. Yet, we cannot accomplish our goals in isolation. Europe needs to shift from reactive policies to proactive investments in its industrial sector. Specific incentives aimed at the adoption of renewable energy sources, production infrastructure, and sustainable product development will be crucial for securing the competitive future of the bloc."
