Special Viewing Event at Asakusa Temple: Denboin Garden and Ema Hall

From October 30 to November 3, 2026, the historic Asakusa Temple, located in Tokyo's Taitō Ward, will open its normally secluded Denboin Garden and the Ema Hall for a special viewing event. This exclusive opportunity to explore the garden and view approximately 50 impressive ema artworks, crafted by renowned historical artists such as Utagawa Kuniyoshi and Hasegawa Settan, is designed to celebrate the beauty and heritage of the temple.

The event will also feature spectacular cloud formations that enhance the cultural narratives of the garden during both daytime and nighttime visits. In the evenings, guests can experience the magical “Kinryu Night Party,” where the garden will be illuminated with ethereal lights, and a unique dance performance inspired by the temple's traditional “Kinryu Dance” will be presented. Meanwhile, the Ema Hall will remain open for special visits during daytime hours only.

Guests will have access to a special viewing ticket that allows them to re-enter at any time during the day or night. Moreover, a limited number of tickets that include a catalog titled “Ema of Asakusa Temple”, detailing the primary ema artworks, will also be available for sale.

Tickets for the pre-sale will be available from September 1, 2026, until October 29, 2026, offering a chance to secure admission at a discounted rate.

In addition to the viewing event, on October 30, participants can join a special prayer session held at the main hall of the temple, accompanied by a premium ticket that includes a wooden votive plaque and incense, typically not available for purchase.

Also featured during this period is the “Important Cultural Property Preservation Program,” offering a rare glimpse into non-public areas of the Denboin, including the guest hall and entrance, where significant preservation work has been carried out over nearly a decade. This special program will take place on October 31 and November 1, 2026, and will be guided by a specialist in restoration work.

The event coincides with ASAKUSA CULTURE & LIGHTS 2026, where stunning projection mapping will be displayed on the main hall and Hozomon gate, showcasing the rich 1,400-year history of Asakusa Temple. This projection mapping event is free and requires no prior registration.
