Experience Rice Cultivation from Planting to Harvest in Tsukuba

Experience Rice Cultivation in Tsukuba

The much-anticipated rice planting event is launching on May 23 in Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture, organized by Palsystem Ibaraki Tochigi. This hands-on experience aims to educate families about food sustainability through direct interaction with nature and farming practice.

Held at the exchange rice field managed by JA Tsukuba City, families will have the opportunity to participate in planting rice seedlings while learning about the rice cultivation process. This event not only introduces children to agricultural practices but emphasizes the importance of environmental conservation and the intricacies of food production.

The Event: "Rice Field School"

The event, entitled “Rice Field School,” serves as the first part of a continuous series that allows participants to experience the various stages of rice growth. From 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., participants will engage in practical activities under the guidance of experienced producers, using tools to draw lines in the fields and planting seedlings by hand according to those lines.

After the planting activity, the rice will be meticulously maintained using an environmentally friendly approach, reducing the use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers to half of conventional farming standards. Each family will also receive a bucket of rice to grow at home, fostering a deeper understanding of the cultivation process and the importance of nutritious food.

Continuous Learning Path

Subsequent events include creature observation and weeding in July, with the final rice harvesting slated for September. Through this series, children will learn the essential steps required to grow high-quality food, contributing to their education about agricultural practices. After the ceremonial rice harvest, the rice will be milled and delivered to participating families, reminding them of the effort and care that goes into producing their food.

Promoting Agricultural Awareness

Founded in 2002 by Palsystem Ibaraki Tochigi, JA Tsukuba City, and Palsystem Federation, the Food and Green Exchange Project Promotion Council continues to aim for food self-sustainability and stable agricultural practices. The council encourages a sustainable, resource-circulating agriculture model and new exchanges between urban and rural areas.

Every year, various engagement activities are arranged to enhance understanding among consumers and producers. This year marks the 22nd installment of the Rice Field School, along with year-round programs such as "Field School" and "Mushroom School," giving kids and families the chance to realize the importance of agriculture in nurturing food.

With a commitment to fostering closer ties with local producers, Palsystem Ibaraki Tochigi remains dedicated to sustainable production and consumption practices that benefit the entire community.
