Montefiore Einstein Cancer Center’s Lung Team Honored Globally for Patient-Centered Care
Montefiore Einstein's Lung Cancer Team Recognized Internationally
The lung cancer team at the Montefiore Einstein Comprehensive Cancer Center (MECCC) has achieved significant recognition on the international stage. This esteemed group was awarded the North American Cancer Care Team Award by the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) during their annual meeting in Barcelona, Spain. This award is given to a single institution within different international regions, acknowledging exceptional care provided to patients suffering from lung cancer and other thoracic malignancies.
One of the remarkable aspects of this award is that it is determined based on nominations from patients and their families. Jeanna Dickerson, a lung cancer survivor who was diagnosed with stage III non-small cell lung carcinoma, nominated the team for their outstanding support during her treatment journey. Dickerson, who received neoadjuvant immunotherapy followed by surgery, expressed immense gratitude, saying, “This team gave me the confidence, security, and peace that added to my healing.” She noted that her experience was personalized, acknowledging that Dr. Brendon Stiles, the chief of thoracic surgery and surgical oncology, knew she was expecting her first grandchild.
Dr. Stiles echoed the sentiment of patient-centered care, emphasizing MECCC's philosophy that prioritizes every individual’s unique needs throughout their cancer treatment. His approach is to foster an environment where every patient feels crucially supported—from diagnosis through recovery. This award marks MECCC as the sole center in North America to be honored this year.
In additional remarks, Dr. Balazs Halmos, a medical oncologist and professor at Einstein College of Medicine, highlighted the seamless collaboration among the team members, which has been pivotal in providing holistic care to patients. He stated, “I have such pride in helping to run our multidisciplinary team for more than a decade. This award is a testament to both how we work together to care for our patients and the many ways we support people, like Ms. Dickerson, in ensuring they can return to living their lives to the fullest.”
The entire MECCC thoracic oncology team and support staff played crucial roles in achieving this recognition. The team includes dedicated professionals such as radiation oncologist Dr. Nitin Ohri, nurse navigator Elizabeth Ravera, nurse practitioner Sonia Sebastian, and several others, whose collaborative efforts contribute to the comprehensive care experience. Furthermore, support from nutritionists, mental health social workers, and the Bronx Oncology Living Daily (B.O.L.D.) program greatly assists patients and their families navigating challenges during treatment.
MECCC prides itself on its long-standing dedication to reducing the burden of cancer—especially for individuals from historically underrepresented backgrounds. This recognition by the IASLC not only underscores the exceptional care patients receive but also highlights the importance of community engagement, scientific excellence, and a multidisciplinary approach to cancer treatment.
Founded in 1971 and recognized as a National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center since 1972, MECCC combines innovative research from Albert Einstein College of Medicine with exemplary clinical services provided by Montefiore Health System. Through their merge of advanced science and compassionate care, MECCC continues to redefine excellence in cancer care, education, and outreach within an urban, diverse setting.
In summary, the recognition of Montefiore Einstein’s lung cancer team as an exemplary care provider stands as a beacon of hope and confidence for patients navigating their cancer journeys. This award acknowledges not just medical excellence, but the profound difference compassionate and dedicated care can make in patients' lives.
